The opening ceremony saw Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü reiterate his “Yes to Art” vision of the town as a home for the arts, education and tourism and voice hopes that the new Chamber Theatre would become a community hub.
He was joined by National Education and Culture Minister Cemal Özyiğit at the launch last Thursday of the intimate new 120-seat venue to see the curtain go up on its first performance, a new joint production by Girne and Çatalköy municipality theatres.
Mr Özyiğit said: “My thanks to all who have worked for this day. Theatre is the mirror of a country’s culture, history, social life and politics and is already presenting creative plays which help to make a difference to the community.”
News of the launch was welcomed by Kyrenia Amateur Dramatic Society (Kads), which used to perform at the centre before it closed for the refurbishment.
Kads director Beverley Westbrook said: “This is the news we have been waiting for as we always saw the cultural centre as our home and will be aiming to return there".
