Eccentric characters from Girne’s past are featured in a presentation, The British in Kyrenia, at South Nicosia’s Centre for Visual Arts Research (Cvar).

Rita Severis’s “colourful and often humorous” illustrated talk will highlight the British “colony” between 1920 and 1960 and the social meeting point of the iconic Dome Hotel and town harbour. Dr Severis said: “There were so many artists and eccentrics from Manifold and his wife who thought she was a reincarnation of Napoleon’s Josephine, to Woolsey and the ‘immoral couple’, the Cave Women.” Major-General Sir Courtenay Manifold built the imposing Manifold House near Girne Castle in 1878 which now does duty as the Ego Bar.
