A lifesize clay statue of a fisherman by unique Turkish Cypriot artist Sevcan Çerkez will be paired with another of a female tourist sitting on a bench, with both due to be put in place in the town centre Ramadan Cemil Square this week.
Mr Güngördü said all of the town could identify with the lifelike and nostalgic caricature of the Cypriot fisherman, which has been borne out by scores of comments and congratulations to Mrs Çerkez on social media.
A Girne Municipality spokesman said marble statues from the 1st Girne Sculpture Symposium in October and November last year would now be put into position in the coming weeks.
French sculptor Nicolae Fleissig's geometric composition, The Orientation of the Stone, is to remain on a plinth in front of the Girne Amphitheatre, where the sculptures created there last year remain on show.
Four more marble artworks by Turkish artist Berika İpekbayrak, Spanish sculptor Miguel Isla and Italian artists Antonella Tiozzo and Adriano Ciarla will also be moved to sites chosen by Girne Municipality councillors in the coming weeks but no details were provided as to their likely locations.
A sixth statue of the late “space poet” Osman Türkay by Turkish Cypriot artist, teacher and sculptor Zehra Şonya will be installed in Ozanköy at the opening of its “pekmez” (carob syrup) festival next month.
