More treats for classical lovers

CLASSICAL music lovers are in for more treats over the next five weeks as the 23rd North Cyprus International Bellapais Music Festival gets under way on Tuesday.

The festival, staged under the auspices of the TRNC president, will see 10 concerts at Bellapais abbey until June 21.

Tuesday's opening gala will feature the TRNC Presidential Symphony Orchestra, including musicians from Turkey, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Finland, Sweden and the TRNC and conducted by F Orhun Orhon. Soloists will be Emir Nuhanovic, performing a clarinet concerto by Czech composer Franz Krommer, and TRNC state artist pianist Rüya Taner with Scandinavian violinist Linda Hedlund in Mendelssohn's concerto for violin and piano.

Young local and Turkish musicians will take the stage on May 21 for an Island’s Dream concert featuring works by Schubert, Mozart, Matteis, Piazzolla, Kodaly, Kreisler, Vivaldi and Chopin.
