State Opera and Ballet unit to be established

A state Opera and Ballet unit is being set up within the Culture Department, which has started planning its inaugural performance following last month’s acclaimed rendition of Donizetti’s Elixir of Love.

A proposal for the new section has been drawn up, complete with relevant draft legislation and exam codes, and preliminary studies are now being carried out in collaboration with founding Turkish Cypriot opera singers Tuğrul Enver Töre and Sermin Dikmen Töre to determine which operas and ballets might be performed.

Culture Department head Şehbal Hamzaoğulları said: “We believe this unit will bring about great development in our country’s cultural and artistic life.”

Referring to the Elixir of Love performance by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra, which featured visiting state and Türksoy opera singers from Turkey, the Töres and local baritone Arda Aktar, she said “the first opera to be held with [the TRNC’s] own resources and artistes . . . showed to the public that with the right coordination, opera can be successfully staged in our country”.
