The 14-concert season opening honours pioneering Turkish Cypriot conductor and band leader, 1918-born Zeki Taner.

The double performance by his granddaughter and the national orchestra which was established last year comes on the anniversary of Mr Taner's death in 1992.

Internationally acclaimed Turkish conductor Emin Güven Yaşlıcam, currently the head of İzmir’s State Symphony Orchestra, conducts the two identical concert programmes which include Mozart’s “Linz” Symphony and his Piano Concerto No 21 in C Major.

A concert of Spanish guitar music for 12 strings comes next, on Monday, May 22, and features Iberian father and son Enrique Muňoz de la Vega and Enrique Muňoz Teruel with a programme of works by Torroba, Tarrega, Sanz, Segovia and Brower.

Mr Teruel has toured 20 countries from Europe and the US to Japan, Argentina and Israel, and has overseen his son’s tuition since he was three years old.

Festival organiser Yılmaz Taner rings the changes again the following day when the Austrian choir Muzikfreunde Perchtoldsdorf, headed by conductor Matthias Binder, offerd a programme of Austrian folk songs, Music of the Romantic and a selection of operatic arias.

Tickets are now on sale priced at 25TL and may be obtained from the Bellapais ticket office and Kybele Restaurant, or by calling Şifa Taner on 0533 854 6417 or Rezan Nevzat on 0533 863 0711.

Entrance is free of charge for students with proof of their status for all concerts except the festival's opening and closing nights.
