UK choir returns

BLACKBURN People’s Choir returns to Gazimağusa this month, six years after their debut at the town’s Venetian Palace, for an atmospheric performance with local choirs to support the town’s special education centre.

Walled City Association spokesman Serdar Atai said the concert was originally planned for the Church of St Peter and Paul, but was now lined up for a bigger venue: 7.30pm on Monday, May 29 at the Rauf Raif Denktaş Cultural and Congress Centre.

The award-winning Lancashire community choir first came to North Cyprus in 2009, returning in 2011 to support more local charities with a Girne Amphitheatre concert and an appearance at Alsancak’s Red Lion.

Their 95 members, aged from eight years old to 80, meet every week and describe their interests as “singing whenever we can wherever we can”.

Mr Atai added: “We have invited a Cyprus trio to join us, consisting of mezzo soprano Katie Economidou, Armenian pianist Zara Barkadarian and our local flautist Heran Mirillo, and also the Bicommunal Choir.”

The Cyprus Polyphonic Choirs Association Othello Choir and Eastern Mediterranean University Light of the Island children’s choir will also feature in the programme which has yet to be announced.

Organisers said the UK choir, who fly out on May 27 and will stay on the island for a week, would tour the town before the concert and perform one or two a cappella songs in Namık Kemal Square.

Tickets for the concert are likely to be around 15TL and donations are also welcome to support the Gazi Mağusa Special Education Centre units for disabled students and over-18s.
