Tuesday's match between Turkish Cypriot side Mağusa Türk Gücü and Nea Salamina from South Cyprus was meant to promote peace and reconciliation between the two communities through the medium of sport. As so often on this island, politics got in the way. This symbolic match was organised by Peace and Sport, a Monaco-based organisation whose vice-president is legendary footballer Didier Drogba. The mixed buffer zone village of Pile (Pyla), located next to the British Sovereign Base of Dhekelia in the east of the island, played host. Hundreds turned out to watch the game at the larger of the village’s two football pitches, located on the outskirts of Pile, just south of the buffer zone. The sun shone down on this happy gathering.
