The two-day long ‘Mustafa Vehbi Koç Soarist Geçitkale Cup” saw contesters from 12 countries put on top F3J radio-controlled model aircraft acrobatic displays.
Erel Cankan, of the Federation, said: “Another contest ended in North Cyprus. We try to do better every year. This year, starting from the name of the contest, everything was special again. Eight preliminary rounds and three fly offs rounds were done successfully. I would like to thank to all of you, all participants and supporters to help us to convert the event to special.
“I want to congratulate Philip Kolb who came first with 2995,7, Ryan Hoellein who came second with 2995,1 and Chekh Oleksandr who came third with a score of 2993,3, for putting on such a top performance and indeed everyone who put forward a great performance.”
Coming fourth was Petrenko Oleksandr with a score of 2992,5 and Lennart Arvidsson came fifth with a score of 2988,0.
The two-day leg of the championship was held on April 1 and 2.
Federation chairman Erbay Bayramoğlu said they were working on projects to make the sport attractive to the youth of the TRNC, adding that with such organisations the embargoes on North Cyprus was also smashed.
Mr Bayramoğlu added that full preparations were underway to host a major international Jet Festival in May that will see different [small] model aircraft put on acrobatic displays as there are thousands of air sports enthusiasts. It will be held at Geçitkale airport through special permission, he said.
He also said that Turkish Cypriot competitors had been selected to represent the Turkish national team at the European contest to be held from July 13 to 23 in Slovenia.
