NEU grabs place in EuroCup final

A TRNC basketball team has made history by becoming the first to win through to the finals of a major European tournament.

NEU grabs place in EuroCup final

The Near East University (NEU) women’s team beat İstanbul side Galatasaray 81-68 on their home ground in the EuroCup semi-final last Friday, having defeated them 81-87 in the first leg of their semi-final.

Thousands of spectators filled İstanbul's Caferağa Stadium to watch the second leg, which also had a television audience of millions, and saw competition rookies NEU fight back from a 19-point deficit to reach their maiden final.

Kayla McBride was once again a star performer, notching up 24 points, while Courtney Vandersloot racked up 14 points and 12 assists.

NEU will now play for the women's 2017 EuroCup against Bellona Agü, who are pursuing a long-standing dream of lifting the silverware after losing in two previous finals.

The Turkish side secured a hard-fought semi-final victory over Hatay to reach the final, taking a six-point advantage from the first leg to prevail 64-58 in the second front of a passionate, partisan crowd in Kayseri.

The final will be played across two legs, with the first on Wednesday and the second the following Wednesday, April 12.
