The move last week came days after Mr Tatar met heads of TRNC sports federations to tell them of plans to increase state contributions to all sports by some 70 per cent. Last year, the federations received a total 3 million 150,000TL in contributions, with the figure now expected to top 5 million TL this year.
The football funding agreement was signed by Mr Tatar and KTFF president Hasan Sertoğlu while a separate, two-year league sponsorship deal was also concluded with K-Pet.
Mr Sertoğlu said that football contributed some 60 million TL to the economy each year and that there had been an increase in the number of spectators, with (some) games attracting crowds of more than 10,000 and live television broadcasting the games world-wide. “Such a contribution from a civil organisation is very important,” he said. Referring to the increased state payment, he added: “Our clubs and 14,000 to 15,000 players and staff, in addition to local pitches and the football community as a whole, will benefit from this contribution.”
Mr Tatar said that the “Government felt it appropriate to allocate 8.5 million TL to football…which amounts to 600 million TL in 10 years.”
