AN AFRICAN wildcat illegally imported into North Cyprus was discovered by police during an Alsancak drugs bust on Monday.

A 38-year-old who was allegedly found in possession of 12 grammes of marijuana was detained by police as the authorities decided what to do with the cat.

The suspect, identified only by the initial DD, appeared before a Girne court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody for three days.

The cat has since been taken into care by the Taşkent Nature Park, spokesman Ulaş Şeherlioğlu confirmed.

“We are taking responsibility at no expense to the authorities as they do not have the facilities, experts or funds to look after confiscated exotic pets,” he said.

“We believe this serval cat to be around five years old as we have heard that the unnamed owner acquired it as a cub and has been looking after it for five years.

“It’s majestic and a pure breed born in captivity, not one of the savannah cat hybrids.
