Commuters blasted highways officials for undertaking repairs to roads around the main Gönyeli roundabout dring rush-hour, leading to tailbacks which even left ambulances struggling to cut through the congestion to reach Lefkoşa State Hospital.
The works – hot on the heels of a similar project at Hamitköy which had motorists hot under the collar last month – saw the roundabout closed to vehicles on Wedsnesday for repairs to deformed and uneven road surfaces between the turning to the TRNC Fair Ground, on the Lefkoşa-Gazimağusa dual carriageway, and the Yılmazköy junction on the road to Güzleyurt.
Drivers were diverted towards the hospital, prompting complaints as traffic was left inching forwards.
Some voiced anger that the work had coincided with the end of working hours, meaning “even patients and children were hindered in reaching hospital or home”.
The latest work, in tandem with the now-completed repairs at Hamitköy, forms part of a two-month overhaul of the main east-west artery during which some 5,500m2 of carriageway is to be resurfaced.
The Transport and Public Works Ministry said the entire 1.1 million TL scheme was expected to be completed at the end of September.
