The girl’s paternal uncle, identified only by his initials FB, was wanted by police after an examination of the child at Gazimağusa State Hospital revealed evidence of abuse.

She is said to be undergoing psychiatric treatment to help deal with the trauma.

Special forces closed in on the rape suspect, a sergeant at the Security Forces Command’s Yedidalga Coast Guard Command, in a mountainous area between Büyükkonuk and Kaplıca after police spotted his car following a two-day search. Over 180 bullets “of different sizes” were found during a raid of his home address.

On Wednesday the suspect, 38, appeared before İskele District Court amid tight security.

Police said that FB had given a voluntary statement claiming he had sexual intercourse with his niece “with her consent” 12 times between August and September.

There were “discrepancies found between the testimonies of the suspect”, whose phone was examined, “and the child’s family” the court was told.
