FISTS flew, café chairs were smashed and used as weapons, and a shop window was shattered as scores of men clashed in the heart of Lefkoşa's walled city on the first night of Bayram.
The fighting was said to have involved 30 to 40 people at about 9pm and left the pedestrianised Arasta area “looking like a war zone”, said witnesses at the scene.
Police called to the area made seven arrests, while CCTV footage from is being studied to try to identify others.
The fight broke out in car park behind the Büyük Han, close to restaurants, and the combatants chased each other through nearby streets, passing the Büyük Hamam, before clashing again close to a taxi stop in a small square at the end of Iplik Pazarı Sokak.
Tensions between the factions also spilled over at Lefkoşa State Hospital, where three men wounded in the clashes were taken for treatment. Police were called to maintain calm at the hospital, and there were reports that an ambulance driver had been assaulted while paramedics tended to the injured in the city centre.
