Bar unions hit out at Bertan Zaroğlu for allegedly saying “they like sitting down”, in reference to a group of female lawyers in a Lefkoşa court on Wednesday.
The remark was overheard when Mr Zaroğlu attended a hearing of the case against six men accused of attacks on Afrika newspaper’s office and on Parliament, and was unable to find a seat in the courtroom.
Amid rising tension, police stepped in to appeal for calm after reaction from one of the lawyers and members of the public in court, which brought the retort from Mr Zaroğlu: “You misunderstood me. I wasn’t talking to you.”
The Lefkoşa Local Bar issued a written statement on Wednesday, saying: “His statements towards female lawyers are unacceptable. We will stand against any kind of action against the judiciary and its members.”
Cyprus Turkish Bar Union head Ünver Bedevi, at a press conference on Thursday outside the capital’s courts, condemned Mr Zaroğlu’s “insult”.
