‘Believing in the spirit of change’

Members of the British Alevi Federation have been in North Cyprus to spread the word about their widely practised, yet little known faith. Anne Canalp  joined an expectant Anglo Turkish Association audience to learn more of the community who aim to change this world into a ‘paradise’ based on morality, consent and the sacred power of music and dance.

Alevis make up the second largest faith group in Turkey after Sunni Islam, but their beliefs remain controversial in their homeland.

Mystical Alevism is, though, thriving in the UK and around the world, according to the head of the British Alevi Federation, İsrafil Erbil — who described a recent opportunity to address members of the Anglo Turkish Association in Girne as a “confidence-building” invitation.
