A cross-border link-up of mobile networks, known as interoperability, got under way on Thursday as a confidence-building measure (CBM) and is set to impact on thousands of consumers on both sides of the island.

It is has been described as the most positive development between the sides following the collapse of peace talks in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, in 2017.

The move means subscribers to the TRNC's KKTurkcell or Telsim providers can now roam in South Cyprus at set rates, as will South Cyprus subscribers roaming in the North – though TRNC subscribers will pay more. Previously, mobile subscribers on one side of the border would be unable to gain a signal when on the opposite side.

Swiss company Comfone is handling the financial management and the clearing of charges and credit between networks across the island after Greek Cypriots raised concerns that a direct link-up would be tantamount to recognising the TRNC.
