Casualties as hunt gets underway

The three day season to shoot pigeon, wood pigeon, turtle dove, crow and magpie continues tomorrow and closes on Sunday next week.

Two casualties were hospitalised on the first day as Ahmet Erdoğan fell down a slope in Esentepe, accidentally shooting himself in the abdomen, and Yusuf Alemdağ was wounded in the eye by lead pellets from another hunter's unintentional shot while hunting near Alemdağ.

Hunting Federation (Avfed) head Erhan Keser criticised PM Ersin Tatar for supporting orange growers in Güzelyurt, leaving game-rich hunting areas closed despite a promise to solve the issue following last week's demonstration by hunters in the capital.

Club members met at an Avfed meeting on Monday as the federation warned that more protests could see hunters and anti-hunting protestors clash.

He said: “The Executive Committee of the Hunting Federation decided to postpone a decision to protest the closures, due to intelligence about counter-protests, to avoid negative and unwanted consequences."
