FIVE charities last week reaped the rewards of sport and culture in Girne, with the presentation of proceeds from the fourth St Andrew's Church Annual Music Week in May and April's “Run for Help” half-marathon.
The biggest recipients were the SOS Children’s Village and the Girne Adult Rehabilitation Centre, which each received 101,826TL of a whopping 223,652TL raised by the Turkcell-sponsored second half-marathon in the town, while the Akan Gürkan Education Foundation received a cheque for 20,000TL.
Winning runners in the event, organised by Girne Municipality and the TRNC Athletics Federation and including an internationally approved 21km course as well as shorter distances, were also given with prizes during a presentation ceremony at the Grand Pasha Hotel on Wednesday.
Mayor Nidai Güngördü said participation this year, at 5,404 people, had been double that of 2018's inaugural race, while the funds raised had virtually quadrupled last year’s 60,000TL for the Kemal Saraçoğlu Foundation for Children with Leukaemia and the Fight Against Cancer.
“Compared to last year’s marathon, this year’s was a huge success,” he said, thanking all who had taken part and those who had sponsored and supported the event.
