The Society for the Protection of Turtles (Spot) and Dipkarpaz Municipality-organised 2nd Traditional Caretta Festival and 25th Spot anniversary celebration drew a crowd of more than 200 visitors and locals to raise awareness of the importance of Karpaz nesting beaches for both turtles and tourism.
Dipkarpaz Municipality festival co-ordinator Fırat Borak said: “We can’t wait to do more events like this. It was perfect. Sometimes we feel abandoned here, but not today.
"We also hope to do our own rafts from rubbish contest one day."
Dr Robin Snape added: “Lots of people came to the nest excavation and even more to the hatchling release. Education is the best protection and it was a lot of fun."
Kids watched open-mouthed as Dr Snape crawled from the seashore to kick off the “Be a Turtle” contest before Karpaz student Spot volunteers took over to mimic turtle nest-making while teams lined up for a beach Tug O' War
Artistic entries for Saturday's all-day sandcastle competition featured donkeys while turtles and regular volunteer beach cleans during the day also attracted local helpers.
