THE quest for a new TRNC government begins on Today as former finance minister Serdar Denktaş, at the heart of a land lease controversy that brought down the four-way coalition, yesterday ruled himself out of any new administration -- and was sensationally accused of another alleged misdemeanour by an erstwhile Cabinet colleague on live TV.
A week of political drama saw Mr Denktaş resign unexpectedly on Wednesday after being criticised in Parliament over the lease to his son of state land.
He said he had stepped down to avert any impact on the Cabinet from what he called “continuing attacks” and asked for his parliamentary immunity to be lifted so that he could clear his name. Meanwhile his Democrat Party (DP) would continue to support the Republican Turkish Party (CTP)-led coalition.
However Deputy Prime Minister and Kudret Özersay, demanded to see all land leases during the lifetime of the coalition, withdrew his nine-MP People's Party (HP) from the alliance soon afterwards after a 55-4 party assembly vote.
