Mustafa is 25 and a Turkish Cypriot — and has been waiting for 14 years to obtain “Republic of Cyprus” citizenship.
His Turkish Cypriot mother and Turkish father fell in love as students in İstanbul and moved to North Cyprus where he was born. His mother has “Republic of Cyprus” nationality, and on the strength of that he applied to South Nicosia for citizenship as a teenager in 2004.
Since then he has been back and forth to check on progress, only to be told repeatedly to wait “another month, two or three” — and that “3,000 others are in the same situation”.
