Members of the Women’s Councils staged a demonstration in Gazimağusa on Tuesday, which mirrored those taking place in 23 cities in Turkey to raise awareness of the Council of Europe’s Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence, known as the İstanbul Convention.
The protests followed the stabbing to death in Turkey of mother Emine Bulut, which sparked an outcry after harrowing mobile phone footage which emerged on social media last Friday. Her ex-husband has admitted to the killing.
Protesters in the TRNC held placards with slogans such as “We Don’t Want To Die” and “Boyhood Needs Manhood”.
