He is the second person to declare their candidacy, joining Republican Turkish Party leader Tufan Erhürman. Incumbent Mustafa Akıncı has yet to announce his decision, but is widely expected to seek a second term.

It will be Dr Özersay’s second attempt to become the elected representative of the Turkish Cypriot people. He finished fourth in the first round of the 2015 race, also as an independent candidate, with 21.25 per cent of the vote. He later went on to form the People’s Party (HP), which is currently the junior partner in the coalition government.

Making an announcement via social media on Thursday, Dr Özersay announced his candidacy under “four visions”.

He said his first “vision” is to have a “multi-dimensional and proactive foreign policy”.

His other three other goals are “cooperation for a solution, before a solution”, “communal peace” and a “new structure of the presidency”.

Explaining his decision to run as an independent candidate, Dr Özersay wrote that the President should be above party politics and that he would be standing down as HP leader.
