Veysel Can, 51, a tourist from Turkey, died instantly when he was struck by a car driven by Mahir Salman Söker, 42, on Ecevit Caddesi at about 7pm, police said.
Mr Can had been attempting to cross the road in front of the Büyük Anadolu hotel where he was staying when he was hit by a car.
Mr Söker was arrested and appeared at the Girne District Court on Tuesday.
Dilara İrdem, a sergeant from the Girne police traffic unit, testifying under oath, said that Mr Salman had been travelling “on the right-hand [overtaking] lane of the dual carriageway” in a “careless” manner and using “excessive speed when he hit [Mr Can] as he was attempting to cross the road”.
Mr Söker was arrested at the scene, police sergeant İrdem told the court, and provided a “voluntary statement” to the police. She said Mr Söker worked as a driver for another hotel.
The suspect was remanded in custody for three days to allow police time to examine CCTV footage, take eyewitness statements and carry out tests for alcohol from blood samples taken from Mr Can’s body during an autopsy.
