BODYBUILDER caterers at a new Girne Café are to join forces with the SOS Youth Centre in November in a joint project aimed at promoting better nutrition and offering traineeships to young people.

TRNC National Fitness Modelling team member Güran Ataker, 27, and Salih Kayasal, 19, have launched their “healthy eating as a mainstream lifestyle” Food for Fit Café in Salih Miroğlu Caddesi.

The new venture will see them also open a Third Generation Café at the youth centre.

Mr Ataker said: "I started fitness training 10 years ago, gained muscle weight and began to learn about nutrition.

"In 2015, I was alone for 10 hours a day on guard duty in the army and thinking about my future. I had the idea to combine all my interests and prove myself to my family.

"Food for Fit is not just for bodybuilders, although we have a lot of gym-goers as customers."

The fitness entrepreneurs won the café tender at the SOS Youth Centre, Gigem, opposite the Mete Adanır football stadium, and plan to serve healthy cakes, snacks, fresh fruit juices and speciality coffees.

SOS Youth Centre co-ordinator İsmail Bayramoğlu said: "They are great role models and will operate the café on our premises and offer traineeships to our young people.

"This is part of our larger project which is offering courses – some for everyone, others for a target group of 16- to 26-year-olds – which will start in September."

Subjects at the youth centre, which opened last May and is home to 10 teenagers, include language classes in Greek, French or English, yoga, pilates and a range of vocational courses.

Mr Ataker said: "We decided to make this new café our social responsibility project after Fit for Food took off so quickly. Healthy is the new sexy."

He has enlisted nutritionist Emine Ömerağa to help devise a zero-sugar and zero-transfats menu of healthy breakfasts, wholewheat bread sandwiches, low-fat protein meals and fresh juice cocktails.

The extensive menu lists nutritional values including kilocalories and the amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat; water is supplied in glass bottles only; and all sandwiches and meals are served on approved crockery or packed in food-grade takeaway containers.

Mr Kayasal said: "Everything is prepared fresh daily. Fast food doesn't have to be bad for you."

Mr Ataker added that they also had plans to start a membership delivery scheme to supply a week's worth of meals custom-made for special diets, such as for fitness or diabetics.

“I want Food for Fit to become a brand for fast food healthy living."
