Erdoğan: 3rd drilling ship may be on its way

TURKISH President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced that a “third drilling ship” could be on its way soon to the waters of Cyprus as part the ongoing quest to find hydrocarbons in the eastern Mediterranean.

Erdoğan: 3rd drilling ship may be on its way

Mr Erdoğan was addressing the Justice and Development Party (AKP) headquarters in Ankara on Thursday, where he said: “If we have reached the point of having the right to speak in the eastern Mediterranean, we owe this to the drilling and seismic ships we acquired at the time.

“No one can try and deprive us on issues where we have rights. . . There could be a question of a third drilling ship arriving.”

Turkey currently has two drilling ships in the region, the Fatih, located to the west of the island in an area that Turkey says forms part of its continental shelf, and the Yavuz, off the tip of the Karpaz peninsula.

Mr Erdoğan’s remarks came after the Greek Cypriot press reported this week that an offer had been made in August for Turkish Cypriots to reap a 30 per cent share of any profits from hydrocarbons – but on the condition that Turkey recognises the Greek Cypriots’ self-delcared exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
