For those who died in the service of the Crown

THE TRNC was represented at state level for the annual Remembrance Sunday service in Girne for the first time in nearly 10 years as 51 visitors from the UK joined British residents and guests from South Cyprus to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives while serving under the Crown, including in Cyprus.

Prime Minister Ersin Tatar and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay were among those to attend the emotional ceremony at the Old British Cemetery in Girne.

It was the most senior representation by the TRNC since the late President Rauf Denktaş attended in 2010.

Extra chairs were provided to accommodate hundreds of people as this year marked the 10th anniversary of the unveiling of the British Cyprus Memorial.

The service was conducted by St Andrew’s Church Reverend Mike Graham for the second year running.

Commentary was provided by Colonel John Hughes Wilson and former British MP Stephen Day, supported by Les Evans and sound by Dave Mancini.

Also attending was Republican Turkish Party MP Fikri Toros, former Chief Justice Taner Erginel and his wife, Peyman, Girne District Officer Sinan Güneş and the Prime Ministry’s political and legal affairs director Serap Destegül Redif.

Kim Tyler proudly carried the Union Flag while Mick Bone was the standard-bearer for the Royal British Legion (RBL) Kyrenia Branch and Bill Clark for the British Cyprus Police.

RBL Kyrenia Branch president and Air Chief Marshall Sir Michael Graydon, GCB, CBE, laid a wreath on behalf of the Queen.
