Businessman Mehmet Eminoğlu, the man behind the Magic-branded real estate projects, notary Serdar Özbekoğlu and architect Muammer Uğursöz are all on trial over claims they colluded in a title deeds scam.
Eminoğlu and Özbekoğlu, head of the Girne branch of the National Unity Party (UBP), are accused of counterfeiting power-of-attorney documents that were then passed to staff at the Girne Land Registry. Two employees there have also been accused of involvement in the alleged fraud and have been bailed pending trial.
More than a dozen properties, including flats and shops, were said to have been “illegally” transferred to a company called Yaztech Investment, run by Uğursöz.
Addressing reporters last Friday outside Girne District Court, where the case is being heard, Eminoğlu's wife, Özlem, demanded police protection after claiming “death threats” had been made against her and her children.
She spoke after her husband submitted a 15-page voluntary statement to the court claiming he had been coerced into committing fraud by two men, one named as Osman Tıraşoğlu.
Media reports later claimed Mr Tıraşoğlu had been granted TRNC citizenship by UBP Girne MP Kutlu Evren while he was the interior minister from 2016 to 2018 “in return for a shop worth £300,000”.
Mr Evren was introduced to Mr Tıraşoğlu by Eminoğlu and asked for citizenship “in order to conduct more easily his legal and commercial work as a contractor” on the FEO Elegance development in Girne, Cyprus Today’s sister newspaper Kıbrıs reported.
