Govt approves amnesty law for foreign students

An amnesty could be granted to some of the TRNC’s estimated 102,000 foreign students, who have failed to renew their official registration and therefore have no legal status in the country.

Govt approves amnesty law for foreign students

By Anıl Işık

Under an amendment to the Aliens and Migration Act that was approved by MPs on December 10, some people who arrived in the country on a student visa within the last six years but then failed to renew their student registration will be exempt from any penalty if they apply within 90 days of the amnesty coming into force with publication in the Official Gazette.

However those liable to a fine of less than the current monthly minimum wage if 2,620TL will, however, still have to pay the money, as will those whose registration lapsed more than six years ago.
The new measure is part of efforts to upgrade the student registration system, which is now available online through a special portal set up by the Interior Ministry’s Immigration Department at https://permissions.gov.ct.tr/login.
