The warning was made by Public Works and Transport Minister TolgaAtakan, who lashed out at the private T&T consortium, made up of Turkish firms Taşyapı and Terminal Yapı, over ongoing delays in the construction of a new terminal and two runways.

“I do not know whether or not the airport will be finished in 2020, but if the [new] airport [terminal] is not opened, the government is determined to take this action,” Mr Atakan said in a statement this week.

“It is unacceptable to have . . . uncertainty for another one or two years. If necessary the [contract] will be dissolved.”

Mr Atakan claimed that 13 new airports had been built in Turkey since construction work began at Ercan.  Construction of the terminal building was started in 2016.

T&T spokesman Serhat Özçelik told Cyprus Today that the consortium was “working hard” to finish the project before the end of the year.
