AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after a new state primary school under construction in Karakum collapsed on Saturday, leaving five workers hospitalised.

Govt starts inquiry into school building collapse

The 2,500m2 site failed on the 60th day of work while tonnes of concrete were being poured into shuttering, causing supporting columns to collapse.

The incident happened after contractors Cysling Construction Ltd had promised to complete the new school building within 150 days.

Girne district governor Sinan Güneş inspected the scene of the accident and reported that three workers suffered slight injuries, one a dislocated shoulder and the fifth a blow to the head but all were released from Girne State Hospital after observation.

Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors’ Union head Cafer Gürcafer, who on Thursday chaired a building standards conference in Lefkoşa, told Cyprus Today yesterday: “State projects should be using modern formwork systems by now. A committee has been set up to investigate.”

The rubble at the school building site was swiftly bulldozed this week following a visit by officials from the Department of Construction Planning, which issues permits and conducts checks on state-commissioned building projects.
