Group seeks 'best elderly care practice'

CAMPAIGNERS seeking improvements in care for North Cyprus's old folk following what they say has been decades of government neglect have taken their search for “best practice” in the field to South Cyprus.

Members of the Association of Elderly Rights and Mental Health on Tuesday toured a private care and rehabilitation centre in the South Nicosia district of Latsia, where some 50 people are currently being looked after in the 60-bed unit – one of three run by the Materia Group in the city.

Residents stay in en-suite rooms with a maximum of two beds, TV, a ceiling fan, air-conditioning and central heating, while the “purpose” built centre has a physical rehabilitation room, several living areas and a garden, and is currently building a hydrotherapy pool.

“A series of creative, entertaining, therapeutic and cognitive enhancing activities are held on a daily basis for the residents,” said a report on the visit by the association’s founding head Hatice Jenkins, her deputy Semral Erel and committee members Şirin Özkaynak Damdelen and Kezban Arıl.
