Groups join forces to aid victims of quake

PEOPLE and organisations throughout the TRNC have joined forces to launch campaigns in aid of those in need following the earthquake in Elazığ, Turkey, which claimed 41 lives, injured dozens and left many homeless.

In response to an appeal, generous donors took a total of 470 blankets and 1,965 items of winter clothing to the Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality in just three days and all has been delivered to the North Cyprus Red Crescent to Hamitköy where aid items are being stored before they are shipped to the devastated area, free-of-charge, by Filo Maritime Services and Çağrı Courier Company.

The Red Crescent is also calling for 10TL donations to be made to help fund aid for the ‘quake survivors by using Turkcell and Telsim numbers to text DEPREM to 4142.

The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Youth Organisation appealed for money to buy blankets, tents and heaters for those whose homes were destroyed or badly damaged in the 6.8 magnitude ‘quake. 

The Democrat Party (DP) collected donations of baby napkins and formula food, tinned food and winter clothing for women, men and children, all dropped-off at the party’s offices in Girne, Gazimağusa, Güzelyurt, Lefke and Lefkoşa.

A call for cash donations was also made by the Cyprus Teachers’ Union (KTOS) for people to send money to the Cyprus Turkish Teachers Cooperative Ltd account number LYTLI-141303, quoting reference KTOS/Elazig Yardımlaşma.
