A seven-hour ministerial meeting last week decided that the 175 citizenships, out of 1,200 granted by a previous administration, were “illegal”.
Announcing the decision on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay said that to avoid “inconvenience” to individuals affected, they would be offered a 90-day “special residence permit” during which they could apply for a standard work or business permit.
However Aras Karabal, owner of the Karabal gift and jewellery shops near Bellapais Abbey, told Cyprus Today he was “very upset” over the decision and would take legal action.
