In the “first recorded journey” of its type, two youths from Mersin’s Aydıncık district paddled their canoes from Mersin to Girne to commemorate last Friday’s August 30 Victory Day, while also raising awareness of the dangers of drugs.

Experienced canoeists Şenol Özdemir and Nüşabe Paşazade of the Expedition Team were handed Turkish and TRNC flags by Aydıncık Mayor Ferat Aktan before setting off with an escort emergency boat at 2pm last Friday.

Arriving on schedule the following day at Girne yacht harbour, they were welcomed by Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, Girne District Officer Sinan Güneş and Girne Mayor Nidai Güngördü.

Mr Tatar was presented with the Turkish flag in a special ceremony where he said that his anti-drugs commission fully supported the epic journey and congratulated the two on successfully canoeing across the Mediterranean “from motherland Turkey to the TRNC and sending a message that we will forever be together”.
