One of four turtles currently under care at the Meritta Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Alsancak’s Merit Crystal Cove Hotel, the green juvenile turtle was brought in by Şalvar Kaptan on August 4 after he promptly rescued it from his nets.

Dubbed Almond by the Meritta team headed by biologist Silem Sargın-Kara, Almond was released from a transportation tank in front of spectators and a costumed Meritta mascot.

Resident vet and biologist Sude Çelik said: “We are proud to be the only hotel turtle rescue and rehabilitation centre in Europe, thanks to Hande Tibuk who inspired the project."

Net Holding board member and general co-ordinator Hande Tibuk is the daughter of founder and chairman of the board, Besim Tibuk.

Ms Çelik said: "Almond is too young to tell if male or female and stayed with us for three weeks due to softening of the shell.

“We are indebted to all the fishermen who are trying to mitigate the damage to turtles. Some turtles lose flippers to fishing lines, others have head injuries and many drown.
