Oya Tuncalı, the country’s representative in London, spoke out against a group of 17 MPs who took part in a recent Greek Cypriot campaign marking the 45th anniversary of July 20, 1974.
The date is celebrated as Peace and Freedom Day in the TRNC, which rejects terms such as “invasion” and “occupation” used by Greek Cypriots to describe what happened.
Turkish Cypriots in the UK have called on the MPs, including Environment Secretary Theresa Villiers and All-Party Parliamentary Group for Cyprus chairman Sir Roger Gale, to apologise for their involvement in the video, as previously reported by Cyprus Today.
“The statements in the video [are] based on a biased account of the situation on the island and constitute a misrepresentation of facts,” Mrs Tuncalı said.
She stressed that there was “not a single UN Security Council resolution on Cyprus that refers to the legitimate intervention of Turkey as an ‘invasion’”.
Mrs Tuncalı continued: “Indeed, it was the Greek Cypriot administration which unlawfully invaded, by force, and subsequently occupied the 1960 Republic of Cyprus in December 1963, and, in doing so, destroyed the three-year-old partnership formed jointly by Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
