vegetables and bread at any of six supermarkets.
The bags of shopping are then left out on hooks to be collected for free by members of some 20 families who are officially registered by the local authority as being in need.
Any bags that are not taken by 8pm each day are than collected by council staff and distributed among the families.
“Different families receive bags of food each day, depending on how many are left over,” a spokesman said.
The initiative has been adopted by six Alsancak supermarkets – Lemar, İleli, Starling, Atakara, Dolmacı and Taymar.
“This charitable project is spreading very quickly, with donations from people at designated supermarkets making a great contribution to needy, local families,” Alsancak Mayor Fırat Ataser told Cyprus Today:
“I thank all those who are making such donations and helping to overcome local poverty.
“The project was launched after I saw a similar one while on a recent trip abroad.
“I saw how it benefited the community there and immediately wanted something similar for Alsancak. Life is better when we share.”
