OFFICIALS were praised for taking immediate action to stop digging on Karşıyaka's Güzelyalı beach – a prime, officially protected site for turtle nesting about to begin.

A furore erupted among environmentalists and social media users when photographs were published online on Sunday of a digger excavating two rocks from the sand.

Labour and Social Security Minister Zeki Çeler contacted police, while former head of the Chamber of Environmental Engineers Yasemin Çobanoğlu alerted the Environmental Protection Department, which has responsibility for the beach, who in turn contacted Girne District Office.

District Office staff, police and teams from the Environmental Protection Department and Lapta Municipality went to the scene and verbally warned the digger driver and the Anamur Sports Club, which has a café at the beach and was reported to have commissioned the work to make it easier for people to get into the water there.
