An online, distance learning university should never have been given a licence to operate in the TRNC, said a leading education sector figure.

Deputy head of the Higher Education Planning, Supervising, Accreditation and Coordination Board (Yödak) Mehmet Hasgüler, said that the Netkent University licence, which was granted in 2010, had been cancelled because it was illegal.
“In order to apply for a licence, a university must have at least three faculties, six departments and a preliminary permit from the National Education Ministry,” he said.
