As the TRNC marks International Women’s Day, Yasemin Gülpınar reports on the battle against domestic violence, and hears the experiences of just one victim given shelter at the country’s only women’s refuge.

“There’s nothing a woman can’t overcome.” So said a courageous mother-of-three who escaped death at the hands of a husband who abused and attacked her for three years until one day she left for good.

She is now one of five women being cared for at the TRNC’s only women’s refuge.

Cyprus Today exclusively interviewed the unnamed woman who has been given a safe haven at the Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality (LTB) run, EU funded shelter which has so far opened its doors to 66 women and 59 children who experienced violence or threats.
