Poisonous puffer fish catches on the rise

Catches of a new form of poisonous puffer fish are said to be on the rise, with experts warning the public that the smaller, yellow-spotted species is as deadly as its larger relative and calling for renewed government action.

Eastern Mediterranean University Underwater Research Centre specialist and biologist Hasan Deniz Akbora said  that huge amounts of the immature puffer fish, Torquigener flavimaculosus were being landed and that eating them could prove deadly.

He added. “Both the yellowspotted and silvercheeked puffer fishes contain the same poison and are invasive Indo-Pacific migrants via the Suez Canal.”
