Police fine drivers for failing to upgrade number plates

Scores of drivers without new-style vehicle number plates have been netted during police checks countrywide in the days since they became law, and those failing to upgrade their plates now face tougher penalties since the fines increased from midnight on Thursday.

A police spokesman confirmed that all fines and state levies based on the minimum wage had gone up in tandem with a Cabinetapproved rise in the official monthly minimum income from 2,620TL to 3,150TL.

Police in the capital stopped 43 offenders in just two hours last week, fining each 262TL — 10 per cent of the minimum wage at the time — and issuing 15 penalty points on their licences.
