Gülay Bayram Çekici an officer at the Judicial Affairs Department of the General Directorate of Police, was remanded in custody for two days after appearing at Lefkoşa District Court on Wednesday, following her arrest the previous day.
She was charged with “obtaining an unjustified benefit”, “attempting to bribe a public servant”, “disclosure of confidential documents” and “misconduct in public office”.
Inspector Çekici was arrested on the grounds that she “embezzled” £341,600 and 160,000TL, said to have been held in accounts under a relative’s name, while also “illegally” acquiring jewellery and a Girne flat and a plot of land in Esentepe belonging to the relative, Judge Gülay Süleymanoğlu was told.
Testifying before the court, Chief Inspector of Police Tarkan Kızıltuğ said that Çekici had met with and “demanded a bribe” from a person under police investigation in exchange for “sight of a confidential document”.
