Police tailed alleged gang boss for a year

Businessman Bulut Akacan was taken into custody, late last Friday, with the other suspects, charged with operating an on-line betting operation and “laundering” its profits.

At the conclusion of a two-and-a-half-hour hearing, Judge Meltem Dundar ordered all 11 defendants to be remanded in custody for a further eight days as police enquiries continued.

Most of the time spent on the hearing was due to the extensive questioning of the officer leading the investigation, Sergeant Yusuf Suiçmez, by defence lawyers.

Sgt Suiçmez said that, on receipt of a letter from the Attorney General’s Office, Akacan’s movements and activities were closely monitored for “about a year”.

Based on statements made by the 10 other  people arrested during a raid on the FEO Elegance complex in Girne, along with the testimonies of six others, it was established that the gambling websites named Dobranet and Kalebet were owned by Akacan, Sgt Suiçmez said.

The officer said that while the suspects were in custody, police raided a further 11 addresses and questioned 33 people, obtaining statements from a 23 of them.
