Mr Akıncı announced on Tuesday his decision not to name a successor to Özdil Nami, who quit last week to become the new Economy and Energy Minister, saying talks with Mr Anastasiades to find a solution on the island could not resume “as though nothing has happened and continue for another 50 years”.
Mr Akıncı’s election in April 2015 raised hopes that he would be able to strike a deal with Mr Anastasiades, who had backed the failed UN “Annan Plan” to unite the island in 2004.
