A SUSPECT who fled to South Cyprus before being returned to the TRNC in a simultaneous, cross-border prisoner swap, has been formally charged with the murder of Turkish Cypriot

Mr Özgöçmen was throttled with a belt in September 2018 and his body was found dumped in the forest near İskele’s Long Beach.

Muhammad Salman, 53,appeared before İskele District Court on Friday last week, where he pleaded not guilty to the premeditated murder of Mr Özgöçmen.

Salman, a Pakistani national, was also charged with robbery, illegally residing in the TRNC and violating a military area to cross into the South, prosecutor Ahmet Özlemler told the court.

He had been handed over to TRNC police in June in a UN-brokered exchange for four Georgians who were wanted in the South in connection with the alleged gangland murder of Ernesto Leonides, as previously reported by Cyprus Today
