CRISIS meetings on controversial town planning legislation will be held this week after Cyprus Turkish Building Contractors’ Union (KTİMB) construction vehicles besieged the Prime Ministry on Thursday and yesterday.

Members converged on Lefkoşa from Girne, Güzelyurt, Lefke, İskele and Gazimağusa on Thursday morning in noisy banner-bearing convoys to protest a six-month freeze on the Gazimağusa, İskele and Yeniboğaziçi zoning plan.

KTİMB head Cafer Gürcafer held a short meeting on Thursda with Prime Minister Ersin Tatar, who imposed the temporary freeze on legislation in January after it had due to come into effec on December 31.

The “siege” ended at 5pm yesterday after Mr Gürcafer emerged to make a statement following a two-hour second meeting between union officials and ministers.

“It was a productive meeting and we will all be working through the weekend to return on Monday for meetings every day next week with a newly convened commission,” he said.
